Leonard Cohen/Peter Murphy

Leonard Cohen’s songs and poetry are defined by their emotional and intellectual intelligence. Lyrically potent, his books and recordings are full of romance, innuendo and humour and in performance he could be electrifying and charismatic, smoke-black vocal chords navigating the most sophisticated and arresting of melodies. His words have influenced many artists and continue to captivate generations around the world eight years after his death. Novelist, song-writer, performer and reviewer Peter Murphy discusses the legacy of Cohen with Tom Mooney. Leonard Cohen (born September 21, 1934, Montreal, Quebec, Canada died November 7, 2016, Los Angeles, California, U.S.) was a Canadian singer-songwriter whose spare songs carried an existential bite and established him as one of the most distinctive voices of 1970s contemporary music and he continue to write and to perform in the decades that followed.
