If you’re the active type, why not bring your bicycle and cycle through the streets of many of Wexford’s historical and cultural towns and villages or cycle the Eurovelo Route Cycling Trail. Check out another blog where we highlighted the Best Cycling Routes for Bike Lovers. Maybe you’re a real sporting type and want to try your hand at some water sports – Wexford’s coastlines and rivers offer the perfect base for some windsurfing, canoeing or kayaking that’s entirely free if you have your equipment to bring along. Be sure to understand the water and stay safe while taking part in these activities.

Take a day trip to Kilmore Quay and visit the state-of-the-art playground there which is just beside the car park overlooking the beautiful Saltee Islands. Then take a walk down to the harbour where you may spot some seals following the fishing vessels!

Discover Old Stories with Wexford’s Heritage Sites

If history and culture is your thing, then the following historically significant locations are a must-visit:

Ferns Castle

The castle was built in the 13th century and originally, it formed a square. Only half of the castle now remains, but it is still an incredible sight. Ferns was once the capital of the Ancient Kingdom of Leinster and Ferns Castle served as the political base for Diarmait Mac Murchada, king of Leinster. It is also home to the Ferns Tapestry, a 15-metre long tapestry detailing the history of Ferns. Enjoy a free tour, insightful guide and visitor centre as well as a walk around the stunning architecture.

Vinegar Hill Battlefield

Not only are the views from the top of the hill worth the walk up, but this landmark is also one of huge historical importance in County Wexford. Parking is free and you can read the stone plaque explaining the history associated with the place, the tower ruins and spectacular views. Sit back, relax and look down on Enniscorthy and its surrounding countryside and take time to contemplate on the sheer significance of what happened here.

Tacumshane Windmill is the only complete windmill of its kind in the country. The impressive structure was built in 1846 and you can even have a look inside the windmill – just collect the keys from the nearby Meyler’s Millhouse Bar & Restaurant!
